Murmur

Dictation that never leaves your machine.

Press a hotkey, talk, press it again: cleaned-up text is pasted wherever your cursor is. A self-hosted alternative to paid dictation apps, running speech-to-text entirely on-device.

Paid dictation apps charge 12 to 15 USD a month, and they work by sending your voice to their servers. Murmur does the same job in about 200 lines of Python, entirely on your own computer: a hotkey starts and stops the microphone, a local speech-recognition model (Whisper) turns the audio into text, filler sounds like "um" are stripped out, and the result is pasted into whatever window you were typing in. The only thing it ever downloads is the model itself, once.

weekend hack

What it actually took. The pipeline worked first try against generated test audio; the real lesson came live on a real keyboard. The text kept pasting twice. The transcript itself was clean, so the bug had to be in the delivery step, and it was: the program pressed Ctrl+V while my hand was still holding down the hotkey, and the two collided. The fix is to wait until the keys are physically released before pasting. This is v1, a console app; a small tray frontend is the planned next step.
